Surf City Source Media Group was founded in 2009 as a writers’ consortium, a group of writers working together to develop creative ideas, to critique and edit texts, to conceive and implement marketing ideas and to publish texts in print and e-text formats. We may be unique as an author-driven ‘publisher-at-large’ –we have no physical business location but operate via regular contact both in-person and in real-time internet meetings. All contributors within the group are considered independent contractors and nominal shareholders in the partnership. No one is on salary. Profits (if any) are shared by the members in proportion to their individual contributions to each project.
The idea of artistes co-producing each other is not new but in our case
is styled after The Beatles’ work with Apple Corps., Ltd, in
1967-1973. Richard DiLello’s excellent memoir, The Longest Cocktail Party (Playboy Press, 1972), of which Colin, Jonnie and Rick are big fans, has been an invaluable resource.
As an independent publisher, we aim to advise, edit, polish and promote
literary voices that are not being heard through other channels. To
benefit the independent author, our declared areas of expertise are:
• Editing for grammar, spelling, usage (application of SCS Stylebook);We are not a large organization with much in the way of capital, nor do we pretend to be. We just share a belief that well-focused work and faith in an honorable mission are the foundation of an interesting joint venture which may also provide some economic compensation. Though based in southern New Jersey we are eager to work with new authors from all over. See our submission guidelines for how to seek publication through SCS.
• Editing for facts-checking, plot development, characterization and holistic narrative structure;
• Conversion of text files for e-text and/or paperback publishing platforms;
• Provision of ‘reader’s response’ impressions in a variety of genres and markets;
• Provision of in-market and online critical reviews;
• Application to US and/or UK/Commonwealth lingustic markets;
• Generation of marketing materials, including cover blurbs, advertising copy and press releases;
• All-around good vibes.
